Working from home has become the new normal for many people. A good workspace starts with good lighting. LED panels provide even, glare-free light that improves concentration and prevents eye strain. But which LED panel should you choose for your home office?
UGR19 for glare-free working
The UGR value indicates the amount of glare a lamp produces. For office work, UGR19 or lower is ideal. These panels provide even light without annoying reflections on your screen. You can work for hours without eye strain or headaches. LED panels with UGR19 have special diffusers that distribute the light evenly. They are slightly more expensive than standard panels, but the difference in working comfort is enormous, especially if you spend 8 or more hours a day at your desk.
Cool white 4000K for optimal concentration
Light color affects your alertness and concentration. Cool white 4000K is the ideal color temperature for office work. This light is bright enough to stay alert, but not so harsh that it becomes tiring. It's similar to daylight on a cloudy day and supports your natural biorhythm. Warm white 3000K is too cozy and can cause drowsiness while working. Daylight white 6500K is too bright and can be tiring over time. Cool white 4000K is the golden mean for productive working from home.
Sufficient lumens for your workplace
For office work, you need at least 500 lumens per square meter. For a 10m² workspace, this means at least 5000 lumens. A 60x60 cm LED panel with 3500-4500 lumens is perfect for an average home office. Do you have a larger office or do you work on detailed tasks like drawing or designing? Then choose 750-1000 lumens per square meter. Too little light causes eye strain and difficulty concentrating. Too much light can also be tiring, so find the right balance for your needs.
Dimmable for flexibility
Dimmable LED panels give you the flexibility to adjust the light to the time of day and your tasks. In the morning, you might want a brighter light to wake up, while in the evening, you prefer a softer light. With a dimmable LED panel and a suitable dimmer, you can control the light intensity to your liking. Note: not all LED panels are dimmable, and not every dimmer works with LEDs. Check if the panel is dimmable and what type of dimmer you need. Trailing edge dimmers work best with LED lighting.
Installation and placement
Place your LED panel above your desk, not directly above your head, but slightly forward, so the light falls on your work surface without shadows. For a 120x80 cm desk, one 60x60 cm panel is usually sufficient. Do you have an L-shaped desk or multiple workstations? Consider two panels for even lighting. LED panels are available in recessed (for suspended ceilings), surface-mounted (with a surface-mounted frame), and suspended versions. Choose the mounting method that best suits your ceiling. Surface-mounted is the easiest to install and works on any ceiling.
