LED lighting for the carport and canopy

LED verlichting voor de carport en overkapping

A carport or covered area protects your car from the elements, but is often poorly lit. Good lighting makes it safer to get in and out, load things, and find your car at night. But which LED lighting should you choose for a semi-open space exposed to the elements?

IP44 minimum, IP65 recommended

A carport is semi-open and exposed to rain, wind, and moisture. Therefore, choose lighting with at least IP44 protection. This is splashproof and can withstand rain from the side. Even better is IP65 , completely waterproof and dustproof. IP65 fixtures last longer outdoors and can withstand heavy rain and wind. For fully open canopies, IP65 is actually mandatory. Don't skimp on IP ratings; this prevents defects and dangerous situations.

How many lumens do you need?

For a standard 3x6 meter (18m²) carport, you need at least 3000-4000 lumens for sufficient lighting. This equates to approximately 200 lumens per square meter. You can achieve this with two 20W LED fixtures, each with 2000 lumens, or three smaller 15W fixtures, each with 1500 lumens. Distribute the lighting evenly along the length of the carport for shadow-free light. Place fixtures not only at the entrance, but also halfway and at the end to illuminate the entire space.

Wall mounting or ceiling mounting

For carports with a back wall, you can use wall-mounted lights. These are mounted to the wall and shine downward and forward. Choose fixtures with a wide beam (120 degrees or more) for good light distribution. For carports without a back wall or with only posts, use ceiling-mounted fixtures. LED panels, surface-mounted spotlights, or waterproof fluorescent fixtures are ideal. Mount them securely to the roof structure and ensure wiring is well-protected from moisture. For covered areas near the front door, you can use wall lights with sensors, so the light turns on automatically when you arrive.

Cool white for functional light

For carports and covered areas, you typically choose cool white 4000K. This provides bright, functional light that allows you to clearly see where you're going and what you're doing. Cool white light also creates a sense of security and brightens the space. Warm white 3000K can feel too cozy and dark for a functional space. Do you also want to use the carport as an outdoor space for parties or barbecues? Consider dimmable lighting or a second circuit with warm white light for ambiance. This way, you have functional light for everyday use and mood lighting for special occasions.

Sensor or switch

Motion sensor lighting is ideal for carports. The light automatically turns on when you arrive and off after a set time (usually 1-10 minutes). This is not only convenient but also saves energy because you won't forget to turn the light off. Choose a sensor with adjustable sensitivity and range to prevent the light from turning on every time a cat walks by. Alternatively, a twilight switch automatically turns the light on when it gets dark and off when it gets light. Or combine both: a twilight switch with a motion sensor only turns on when it's dark and there's movement. LED lighting uses so little that even daily use barely affects your energy bill.
