Installing outdoor lighting: from wall lamps to spotlights

Buitenverlichting plaatsen: van wandlamp tot schijnwerper

Preparation and planning

Before you start installing LED outdoor lighting , make a plan. Which areas do you want to illuminate? Consider the front door, driveway, garden path, patio, and any dark corners. Determine the type of lamp you need for each location and the amount of light. For functional lighting at the front door, choose different lamps than for mood lighting in the garden. Measure the distances and check where you have or need to install a power supply.

Wall lamps at the front door

Ideally, place outdoor LED wall lights 1.80 to 2 meters high next to the front door. This way, they illuminate visitors' faces and the doorway without causing glare. Choose lights with at least an IP65 rating for outdoor use. If you have a wide front door, place a light on either side for symmetrical lighting. Ensure the wiring runs behind the wall and is not visible.

Floodlights for driveway and garden

LED floodlights should be installed higher, at a height of 2.5 to 4 meters, to illuminate a large area. Aim them downward at a 30- to 45-degree angle for optimal light distribution without glare. For a driveway or patio, choose floodlights with 2000 to 4000 lumens. Mount them securely to the facade or on a pole and ensure they don't shine directly into the eyes of passersby.

Garden path lighting and spotlights

For garden paths, use low-profile post lights or ground spotlights. Place them every 2 to 3 meters along the path for even illumination. Ground spotlights can be directed upward to highlight trees or plants, or downward to illuminate the path. Pay attention to cable depth: lay cables at least 40 centimeters deep to prevent damage during gardening. Always use suitable outdoor cables with the correct diameter.

Electrical connection and safety

All 230V outdoor lighting must be connected via a residual current device (RCD) for safety. If in doubt, have this done by a certified electrician. Use waterproof junction boxes and ensure all connections are properly insulated. Solar LED lighting doesn't require wiring; simply place it wherever you like, and you're done.

Maintenance and inspection

After installation, check that all lights are working properly and securely mounted. Clean the lights a few times a year to maintain optimal light output. Check the wiring annually for damage. LED lights last a long time, but sensors and switches may need replacing after years. With proper maintenance, your outdoor lighting will last 15 to 20 years.
