IP20: for the dry, heated garage
Do you primarily use your garage to park your car, and is the space dry and possibly heated? Then IP20 lighting is sufficient. These lights are protected against dust and contact, but not against moisture. Think of LED panels or fluorescent fixtures, which you'll also find in offices. However, be aware that if condensation forms or you drive your car in while wet, IP20 is too low.
IP44: the safe choice for most garages
IP44 is the sensible choice for most garages. This lighting is splashproof and resistant to moisture and condensation. Perfect if you regularly drive in with a wet car, the garage isn't heated, or you work with water during car washes. IP44 fixtures are available as LED panels, fluorescent fixtures, and work lights.
IP54 or higher: for workshops and damp garages
Do you use your garage intensively as a workshop, does it regularly have standing water on the floor, or is there a lot of dust from sanding and sawing? Then choose at least IP54 . These lights are dustproof and splashproof, ideal for harsh conditions. For garages that regularly get wet or where you use a pressure washer, IP65 is recommended. This lighting is completely dustproof and protected against water jets.
Practical tips for garage lighting
Choose LED lighting with at least 4000 lumens per 10m² of garage floor space for good work light. Cool white 4000K provides bright, functional light ideal for tasks. Place fixtures above workbenches and in corners where you frequently work. Combine general lighting with focused work lights for detailed work. Ensure switches are located near the door so you don't have to search in the dark. For added convenience, you can choose lighting with a motion sensor, so the light turns on automatically when you enter the garage.
