Shed lighting: from dark space to bright workspace

Your shed is more than just a place to store garden tools. It often also serves as a workshop, hobby room, or studio. But many sheds have poor or no lighting at all. With the right LED lighting, you can transform your dark shed into a bright, practical workspace where you can work comfortably year-round.

IP54 or IP65 for protection against dust and moisture

Sheds are rarely completely wind and watertight. Dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations are common. Therefore, choose lighting with at least IP54 protection. These fixtures are dustproof and splashproof, perfect for most sheds. Do you use the shed intensively for woodworking or other dusty work? Then IP65 is recommended. This lighting is completely dustproof and can withstand water jets, ideal for harsh conditions. IP65 fixtures last for years, even in unheated sheds with a lot of dust.

Cool white 4000K for bright work light

For shed work, you need bright, functional lighting. Cool white 4000K is the ideal light color: it provides a sharp light that lets you see what you're doing without being too harsh. This color temperature is similar to daylight and makes colors clearly visible, which is important for painting or woodworking. Warm white 3000K is too cozy for work and actually makes the shed darker. Daylight white 6500K can be too bright for extended work. Cool white 4000K is the perfect balance for a practical workspace.

Minimum 300 lumens per square meter

For general lighting in your shed, you need at least 200-300 lumens per square meter. For a 20m² shed, this means 4000-6000 lumens total. Using your shed for detailed work like woodworking, model making, or painting? Increase this to 400-500 lumens per square meter. Distribute the lighting across multiple points for even illumination without dark corners. LED fluorescent fixtures are ideal for sheds: they provide plenty of light, are energy-efficient, and are available in dust-proof versions.

Combine general lighting with work lights

Install LED fluorescent fixtures or LED panels on the ceiling for general lighting. Add directional work lights above your workbench, saw, or other workspaces where you do detailed work. A 30-50W work light with 3000-5000 lumens provides sufficient light for precision work. Choose adjustable work lights that you can direct where you need them. For flexibility, you can also use LED work lights on a tripod, which you can move to where you're working. This way, you always have optimal light, no matter where you're working in the shed.

Energy efficient and low maintenance

LED lighting is perfect for sheds because it uses little energy, even when the lights are on frequently or for extended periods. A 36W LED fluorescent fixture provides the same amount of light as a traditional 2x58W fluorescent tube, but uses 70% less energy. LEDs also last 3-5 times longer, meaning you don't have to replace bulbs every year. In unheated sheds, LEDs work perfectly even in freezing temperatures, while traditional fluorescent tubes struggle to start in the cold. LED shed lighting is an investment that pays for itself within 1-2 years thanks to lower energy costs and less maintenance.
