LED lighting maintenance: cleaning and tips for a long lifespan

LED bulb being cleaned with a cloth

LED lighting needs little maintenance, but doing nothing at all is not smart either. Dust, moisture and heat shorten the lifespan and make your lamps give less light. With a few simple habits you keep your LED lighting in top shape for years. Here you can read how to clean safely and what to watch for.

In short

  • Safe: switch off the power and let the lamp cool down before you clean it.
  • Cleaning: use a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, without harsh products.
  • Heat: make sure the lamp can cool down and do not cover it.
  • Check: now and then look at seals, connections and sensors.

Cleaning LED lamps safely

Step 1: power off and let it cool

Switch the lamp off and, for fixtures, switch off the whole circuit. Let the lamp cool for a few minutes, because an LED can still be warm.

Step 2: dust it dry

Dust on the lamp or the cover blocks light. Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush. If it is dirty, the cloth may be slightly damp.

Step 3: no harsh products

Do not use abrasives, alcohol or strong cleaners on plastic covers: they turn dull or crack. Never spray directly onto the lamp and do not let water run into the socket or electronics.

Step 4: put it back dry

Let everything dry completely before you switch the power back on.

How your LED lighting lasts longer

Provide cooling

Heat is the biggest enemy of LED. Do not cover lamps with insulation unless the manufacturer allows it, and in a small, enclosed fixture choose a lamp with sufficient cooling.

Choose the right type for the room

An ordinary indoor lamp in a wet room fails quickly. Use the right IP rating, see IP rating explained.

Combine suitable lamps and dimmers

An unsuitable dimmer can damage the driver. See Dimmable LED lamps and dimmers. If a lamp flickers or buzzes, read Troubleshooting LED lighting.

Maintenance by type of lighting

Outdoor lighting and floodlights

Remove cobwebs, leaves and dirt from the lens and check the rubber seal and cable entry for cracks. See Installing outdoor lighting and LED floodlights.

LED strips and power supplies

Dust the strip dry. Check that the adhesive tape still holds well and that the power supply has room to ventilate. See LED strips.

Sensors

A dirty or frozen sensor lens responds worse. Wipe it with a dry cloth. See LED lamp with sensor.

Indoor lighting and panels

Dust them a few times a year, especially in the kitchen where grease lingers. A lamp that clearly gives less light or changes colour is due for replacement.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean LED lamps?
Switch the lamp off, let it cool down and wipe it with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth. Do not use harsh products.
How often should I clean LED lighting?
A few times a year is usually enough. In the kitchen, garage or outdoors more often, because dirt builds up faster there.
Why does my LED lamp give less light?
Usually because of dust or dirt on the lamp or cover. Clean it. If the brightness drops after years, the lamp has reached the end of its lifespan.
Can I cover LED lighting with insulation?
Only if the manufacturer allows it. LED needs cooling and can overheat if it cannot cool down.
Can I wipe LED lamps with water?
Preferably not. Use a dry or slightly damp cloth and never let water get into the socket or electronics. Waterproof fixtures may be wiped with a damp cloth.
